The work of scholars is essential to addressing topics of liberty, flourishing, and prosperity, but contemporary research has perhaps been impeded by the overly-specialized way that institutions have been studied by academic disciplines. While the prior approaches have all born fruit, the critical insights will come from bringing siloed fields into conversation. Meeting current moment requires a willingness to go against the grain and the capacity to work across academic boundaries.

"Institutions are the building blocks of social order.  The greatest political thinkers of the modern age, from Rousseau to Hume to Hegel, grappled with the question of what kinds of institutions best facilitate the flourishing of human beings and the societies in which they live.  It is exciting to tackle these questions anew — and from a variety of disciplinary perspectives — in the Institutions Initiative."  - Joel Isaac, Associate Professor of Social Thought and History
